The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM)  announced the winners of a contest software applications, during a ceremony on November 2 in the presence of Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer (CTO ) U.S. Government , and Todd Park, Chief Technology Officer of the U.S. Department of Health . The contest "Show Off Your Apps"  sought to distinguish between software applications using innovative and creative way its vast public database.
NLM, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) , is the largest medical library in the world and wants to pioneer in the use of technology to improve access to biomedical information and healthy. The NLM offers the public a wide variety of information: clinical trials, historical images, DNA sequences, etc..
To facilitate access to these data, the NHL has many tools and programming interfaces .
Five winning applications
GLAD4U  is a free web application that allows researchers to answer questions such as "What are the genes linked to breast cancer? ". GLAD4U (Gene List Automatically Derived for You) automates the process of creating lists of genes. This application uses the API "Enter Programming Utilities"  National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) , a department of the NLM. GLAD4U was developed by Jerome Jourquin , Bing Zhang, and Dexter Duncan with the support of biomedical informatics department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
iAnatomy  is an anatomy atlas available on the iPhone and iPod touch. The mobile application allows users to learn anatomy interactively with the ability to zoom in on the images for more details. iAnatomy uses the data of the "Visible Human" of the NLM . iAnatomy was developed by Anouk Stein, MD, a radiologist and computer programmer in Phoenix, Arizona.
KNALIJ , which is pronounced as "knowledge" , helps researchers, students and consumers to visualize large amounts of data, such as information contained in the database of the NLM PubMed publications. KNALIJ this information in the form of visual, interactive maps can significantly improve the ability of researchers to analyze large amounts of information and significantly reduce their exploration time. KNALIJ was developed by Dr. Alan Finkel iWakari company in Los Angeles and his partner Steven Melnikoff honorary guest at the University of Melbourne, Australia.
NLMplus  is an application of semantic search and discovery of who simultaneously search 59 databases of the NLM to allow users to explore the content offered by the NLM in all areas of biomedicine and health. NLMplus was developed by Weizhong Zhu, Ph.D. and Antonio Zamora, weblib LLC of Bethesda.
Quertle  is an innovative web application for research and investigation in the biomedical literature. It is intended for professionals in the life sciences, including researchers and health care providers. Quertle simultaneously search multiple sources of literature in the life sciences, including the National Library of Medicine MEDLINE and TOXLINE. This project was led by Jeff Saffer, Ph.D. and Vicki Burnett, Ph.D. of Boulder, Colorado.

The "Human BioDigital" platform  is a 3D web application to patients, students, and clinicians, which aims to simplify the understanding of the anatomy and diseases of the human body. The application provides tools to explore, dissect and share custom views of the human body, together with detailed descriptions from MedlinePlus  of the NLM service. The platform was developed by systems BioDigital LLC in New York.

It's that time of year when we have to enroll our parents (or ourselves?) in a Medicare Drug Prescription Program.
The President, Senate, Congress and the AARP promoted this program as a way to control drug costs for those who could least afford drugs. I smelled a rat as soon as the AARP bought into it and subsequently sold out to United Health Care and became its marketing tool for Medicare Part B (medical) and Part D (drug) coverage.
Each year, I have done painstaking research on all the various drug programs available to my Mom, and also purchasing drugs from Canadian pharmacies

Since I'm not in her situation, I don't know all the tricks, so she needs to contact others in her situation so she can network and get advice on what works for others.

I have a BA in psych. I will be going to graduate school next year to pursue a doctorate in psych centered around designing a research study to investigate marijuana the functionality of treating people with eating disorders. I'm in the early stages of gathering the body of research to review. However, if someone has any experience or words of guidance, it would be much appreciated.
As far as personal details, I can't disclose much. However, I will be relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area in September and taking the GRE again, scouting out the area, start networking with the academic types; that whole rigmarole
