Swiss born physician immunologist en Riehen, a village near Basel, professor at the University of Zurich, University Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland, covencedor Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1996) with Peter Charles Doherty, Australian scientist St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, USA. By discovering how the immune system distinguishes infected cells from healthy. He studied at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Basel (1962-1968), where he also defended National Board Examination (1968) and MD (1970). Defended Ph.D thesis at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia (1975). Was Visiting Fellow at the Department of Microbiology of the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia and then Assistant Professor in the Department of Immunopathology, Research Institute of Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, California (1976-1979) and Adjunct Associate Teacher Department of Pathology, UCSD, USA (1977-1979).

Moving to Zurich was associate professor in the department of pathology at the University Hospital of Zurich (1979-1988) and his professor (1988-1992), until he became head of the Institute of Experimental Immunology, Zurich (1992). Besides the Nobel collects numerous other honors as Cloetta Stiftung, Zurich (1981), Jung Stiftung, Hamburg (1982), Paul Ehrlich Prize, Frankfurt (1983), Mack-Forster Prize, Europ Ass Clin Inv (1985), Gairdner Foundation International Award Toronto (1986), Institute for Cancer Research, New York (1988), Louis Jeantet Foundation, Geneva (1988), Naegeli Stiftung, Zurich (1992), Award Christoforo Colombo, Geneva (1992) and Albert Lasker Medical Research Award (1995 .)
