The Blog Doctor and Child: DOCTOR IN PEDIATRICS AND CHILD ITALIAN: HISTORICAL EVALUATION

August 29, 2013 – 01:54

The anniversary of the thirty years of publication of Doctor and Child lends itself to an assessment of historical fact, the boundary between the record and the history is not well defined, but the minimum range is just what the thirty years.
The analysis of the magazine allows to detect the evolution of pediatric Italian culture, but it is especially an important documentary source. If in 2001 the assessment was made of the "True and false news in pediatrics» today the entry into history gives the possibility of an overall assessment.
The contribution that provides absolutely original Doctor and Child is the evaluation of the progress of pediatric sciences. It is clear that the update and bibliographic research should be conducted on personal and original works, but Doctor and Child provides an element of documentation important because, through the reports contained in the 'Yellow Pages' and in the annual book: "What's new in pediatrics practice ", you have the reports of the main works at the international level that, when analyzed in chronological order, give both the state of advancement of research, and uncertainties, hopes, or errors of scientific progress.
It is chosen by the international literature performed by leading pediatricians and evaluated by an equally authoritative scientific committee, but the historical fact is interesting that express the state of the art single moment in which they were published.
As you know the story must be based on the documents and therefore Doctor and Child has become a source of historical research only entire Italian market.
Here are some examples. In the same page we note the floor with laser therapy dell'angioma pulsatile, including diabetes, celiac disease, breast feeding, but also furniture and undescended testicle (Doctor and Child 1993, 22:704-705). Or the debate on screening with ultrasound in cases of hip dysplasia in which it is clearly present in the assessment of costs (Doctor and Child 1995; 24:554). A useful reflection can also be that when you write that "in the year passed, the summer of '95 to summer '96, sixty pathogenic genes have been identified, " among them that, next to the Italian research, the Romano-Ward syndrome (Doctor and Child 1996; 25:661).
The "Yellow Pages" gives a further useful for historical research, because the monthly imposes current setting it is a real "pediatric scientific chronicle" that even more represent the spirit of the moment. Just scroll subtitle of "Yellow Pages" of November 1994: "Walking through the virus ... a) chickenpox and orchitis; b) Syndrome mononucleosis Herpesvirus 6 c) Loss of hearing in the course of acute virus disease EB; Disease Kawasaki against rheumatic disease: who and Losers; necrotizing fasciitis from beta-hemolytic streptococcus group A, A hope for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis; Long "memory" for the recombinant vaccine against hepatitis B; Budesonide also in disease Crohn's, How to go to school the children born weighing less than 750 g? ». The sign of the times is also provided by the text selected when you read the last news: "Today are assisted with some frequency infants weighing between 500 and 750 g who were born between the 24th and 26th week ...". Today we are debating the limits even lower. But this is also a sign of the times.
The passage of time is also demonstrated by this alert: "Still on the theme of" large vaccination "does not seem out of place on record the success of large numbers and short time of vaccination against hepatitis B in Taywan. After vaccination, the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in children 6 to 14 years of age declined from 0.74 / 0.36 100, 000 / 100, 000 for those born after 1984 and 0.13 for those born after 1990 (Medical and Child 1997; 26:665). Let us acknowledge that in this thirty years have been on the front page and then forgotten so many vaccines.
The history of science, and therefore also of medicine, should not be limited to a speculation for its own sake, but it is useful to understand the linearity of thought useful to understand the present in order to better identify future courses.
If you examine the policy choices of the reports made, but also of the articles published, it is known as the editorial choices were based more on the stimuli coming from the world of science and pediatric, never force or focus on other topics.
Adhering to the task assigned to the town, which is to understand and interpret, but never to judge, I refrain from any assessment, but the observation of the accuracy and completeness of the topics covered, indicating that the path taken was right and what was winning it is important to continue.

Medical ethics and research

2006-12-27 18:14:20 by Wandwaving

Has anyone heard about new research being done on patients that admit to being abused as children? According to a study I read doctors are providing patients names to researchers who are studing to determine if early childhood abuse is a predictor to future abuse.
The patients family and friends are interviewed without the patients knowledge.
This is a complete breach of trust between the doctor and patient. Has some unethical group privately legalized this invasion of privacy?
